Hi. My name is Diana and I am trying to find historical information on my Great-Grandparent's families as they came from this part of County Wetmeath. My Great-Grandfather was James Francis Garry, son of John Garry and Catherine Cleary. He was born around 1890. My Great-Grandmother was Mary Josephine Sheil, daughter of Patrick Sheil and Mary Ann Hynes. She was born 17 March 1890. They and their families immigrated to New York, New Zealand, and Australia. I know that some of my ancestors/relatives worked in Tyrrellspass, Gainstown, Glendevine, and worked on the Boyd-Rochford Estate. I don't know their history in Ireland and would love to find out if anyone remembers the families (or is descended from them!). Thanks. Kindest regards, Diana 4  out of 4 found this valuable. My paternal grandmother (Mary Kathleen Garry/Gardner - Molly) was the daughter of Mary Josephine Sheil and John Francis Garry - they both immigrated to New Zealand in 1914. I know that many of Great-Grandpa's siblings immigrated to New York. I know from relatives in the USA that some of the Cleary family also emigrated from Ireland and went to NY, but I think some of them stayed. All I know of Great-Grandpa's parents is their names, which I got from his death certificate: Catherine Cleary and John Garry. The names Gainstown and Lynn appear a few times alongside Mullingar as places where family were born or married. Grandm'a cousin (from the Sheil side of her family) gave me copies of the following letters from Rita Algar and from another person in Ireland whose name I don't know. Tyrrellspass featured prominently, and I'll attach a transcribed copy of the letters for you.

A copy of a letter by Rita Algar reads as follows (the grammar is as in the original): "My name is Rita Algar and my Mother taught in Gainstown school for 52 years. Paddy may even have gone to school there. [He was godfather to Rita's sister.] Paddy Sheils lived with his family at Glendevine until they emigrated to New Zealand. However, Paddy did not go and he went to Tyrrellspass to an Uncle for a while, then he came down to Moyliscar and lived with Michael Hynes (another Uncle) and an Aunt (Lizzie Hynes). Michael Hynes built houses and also built Gainstown Church in 1928. He also rebuilt my parents house which had originally by Mrs Locke of Lock's Disterllary, Kilbeggan. My parents house was rebuilt in 1924 which was Lynne Cottage and is still there today. The name was Wheeler. My daughter lives there today. Michael was Godparent to my eldest sister (away at present) When Michael died, Paddy married a Miss Hyland from Tyrrellspass and left to live in England. When Paddy died his widow married a Jack McKenna, for Toar, Tyrrellspass, As this is only a small bit of "history", I will try and get a lot more information as soon as possible and let have through Louie and Nuala." 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Another letter, I don't know who from, reads (the superscript records notes made (I don't know who by) on the original letter). Again, grammar is as per original: "Patrick Sheil came to live with Johnny Hynes Paddy's uncle and his sister Katie Expert Craftsman Harness Maker. (Mick Hynes lived in Toar, TyrrellspassNO) None married - left both farms to Paddy Sheil their nephew YES. They lived in a unique 2 storey Thatched House later destroyed by fire. After the Hynes' family died Paddy lived on his own for a time. After the German BOMBS landed on the North Strand Dublin a family named Hyland bombed out came to live in Tyrrellspass. Paddy married Lily Hyland. She'd be about 30 years his junior. Farming was not their forte so they sold at a time when land in Ireland was poorly priced. They emigrated to England where Paddy died. Lily Sheil later married Bill McKenna. Lily died in England but was buried with her people in Dears Grange Dublin. Bill McKenna is buried Newtown Tyrrellspass." 4  out of 4 found this valuable. Try this site - http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_start.php. The Griffiths Valuation of 1854 shows Peter Garry living in Glendevine and also having land in the neighbouring townsland of Corbally. The farm is now owned by the Newman family. It was left to the mother (Madge - ne. Rabbitte) of the present owner by the Garrys. The original house was thatched and I spent many an hour there many moons ago. 1  out of 1 found this valuable.
